Nightmare Prey Bonus Roll and Champion Chest Rewards

Nightmare Prey Bonus Roll and Champion Chest Rewards

The Nightmare Prey Bonus Roll transforms one Nebulous Voidcore into a random piece of gear after a Nightmare-difficulty hunt. This reward comes in addition to the Preyhunter's Champion Chest and does not replace the chest you get from the same run. Players receive three additional types of Prey Season 2 rewards in Midnight through Afflicted and Tormented Souls and through Ascendant Venomstones, each with their own rules and without a bonus roll. The difference between these rewards determines how you'll spend your currency and how much gold you'll set aside for the weekly exchange.

You can obtain the core for such a roll from the Great Vault or purchase it from Orin Straylight in Silvermoon City. Orin will exchange your gold, Voidlight Marl, or Veteran Mistcrest for one additional Nebulous Voidcore once a week after you complete a quest chain that begins with Decimus in Voidstorm. Both sources give the same core with identical rules. Each bonus roll yields a reward based on the content's difficulty and your specialization.

Nightmare Prey Bonus Roll Rewards

Nightmare Prey Bonus Roll Rewards

A bonus roll for one Nebulous Voidcore grants an equipment item for your current specialization after a Nightmare Prey Hunt, with the item level of a Great Vault reward for that same content. The reward on top of the Champion Chest has its own limits:

  • The game chooses the item - Each roll yields a random reward from a pool and does not allow you to choose a slot, weapon, or specific trinket.
  • The pool depends on the character - The set of rewards from the core changes based on the character's class and specialization. That's why neither a general list of rewards for all classes nor the contents of the Preyhunter's Champion Chest work as a prediction for your bonus roll.
  • No upgrade guarantee - The new reward may be inferior to an item from a raid, key, or previous run that you're already wearing in that slot.
  • One core at a time - The game offers to spend one core after you complete a run. You cannot trigger a second bonus roll for the same Nightmare Prey Hunt, even if you have enough currency for multiple attempts.
  • Nightmare difficulty - Prey Hunts on Normal and Hard do not give a bonus roll.

The game awards a Champion Chest for a Nightmare Prey Hunt even without a bonus roll. Blizzard launched the Nightmare mode for Prey Season 2 during the week of August 18, along with Curse of the Isle and new targets on the Coiled Isle.

Bonus Roll vs Champion Chest

Bonus Roll vs Champion Chest

Midnight Season 2 Prey rewards for the Nightmare Prey Hunt include a bonus roll and the Preyhunter's Champion Chest. A third reward alongside these comes once per week per character in the form of Afflicted and Tormented Souls from Heavy Trunks in Tier 6+ Bountiful Delves:

RewardSourceCostReward TypeLimit
Bonus rollNightmare Prey HuntOne Nebulous VoidcoreRandom itemYour specialization's pool
Preyhunter's Champion ChestNightmare Prey HuntFreeChampion gear, supplies, goldBinds when picked up
Afflicted and Tormented SoulsTier 6+ Bountiful DelvesResource costChampion or Hero gearOnce per week

The bonus roll pool does not include the contents of the Champion Chest. That's why items from the Champion Chest do not indicate what reward you will receive from a bonus roll after the same run. The bind-on-pickup restriction prevents you from transferring the Champion Chest to another character.

Souls and Venomstones

Bonuses from Souls and Ascendant Venomstones do not require a Nebulous Voidcore. The source, access requirements, and purpose of these resources (as well as those of the Corrosive Souls with a similar name) differ in Midnight Season 2:

ResourceSourceRequirementPurpose
Afflicted SoulsHeavy Trunks, Tier 6+Rank 4 Prey JourneyBonus Champion gear
Tormented SoulsHeavy Trunks, Tier 6+Rank 9 Prey JourneyBonus Hero gear
Corrosive SoulsPreyhunter's containers from huntsChance in first fourAltar of Corrosion
Ascendant VenomstonesNightmare Champion gear chestsAscending with Venomstones questItem level upgrade

Patch 12.1.5 shifted the use of Afflicted and Tormented Souls to the time between Prey Hunts. Ascendant Venomstones also drop from Champion gear chests on Nightmare Prey Hunts after you complete the Ascending with Venomstones quest. Ten of these stones at the Catalyst raise the item level of a Season 2 weapon, trinket, or necklace with maximum upgrades on the Hero or Myth track, or of a maximum-quality Tidal Crafted one.

Unlocking and Funding a Voidcore

Unlocking and Funding a Voidcore

The quest chain from Decimus in Voidstorm to Orin Straylight in Silvermoon City unlocks a weekly exchange for one additional Nebulous Voidcore per week:

  1. Decimus in Voidstorm - This NPC gives you the quest In the Catalyst's Shadow and sends you to Orin Straylight at the Catalyst in Silvermoon City. Decimus is willing to take this Void Elf as his apprentice.
  2. Prismatic Potential - Orin gives this quest to level 90 characters of both factions. The quest asks you to collect ten Elementary Voidcore Shards in the Midnight Season 2 endgame content and bring them back to the Catalyst.
  3. Sources of shards - Shards for Prismatic Potential drop from Midnight Season 2 raid bosses, from this season's Bountiful Delves, and from Mythic+ keys. The Nightmare Prey Hunt also yields these shards.
  4. Research after turn-in - Turning in Prismatic Potential triggers research, after which the NPC continues the quest chain.
  5. Umbral Blessings of the Catalyst - Orin gives the next quest as a result of research. Completing this quest unlocks the ability to exchange gold, Voidlight Marl, or Veteran Mistcrest for bonus roll currency at the Catalyst in Silvermoon City.
  6. Weekly exchange - Orin exchanges one of these currencies for one Nebulous Voidcore once a week after you complete the Umbral Blessings of the Catalyst quest. All payment options share a common weekly limit.

This exchange gives you currency for a future bonus roll. You'll receive the reward for this core later, once you complete the Nightmare Prey Hunt or other content with loot eligibility and accept the roll in the Bonus Loot window. Prismatic Potential and exchange quests require the character to be level 90.

Gold and Other Exchange Options

Gold is one of three payment options that Orin accepts for a Nebulous Voidcore. All options yield the same core within the overall weekly exchange limit and differ from each other in price in their respective currencies:

PaymentPriceNebulous VoidcoreLimit
Gold5000OneOverall weekly
Voidlight Marl2000OneOverall weekly
Veteran Mistcrest100OneOverall weekly

We recommend choosing a payment option based on your character's current reserves for this week. The core for 5000 gold is identical to the one you get for Voidlight Marl. Our team offers gold for WoW Midnight in the ChaosBoost WoW services catalog if your character lacks enough gold for this exchange.

Loot Eligibility and Weekly Limits

Loot Eligibility and Weekly Limits

The bonus roll after the Nightmare Prey Hunt follows loot eligibility rules. Your character's specialization, weekly exchange limit, and duplicate reward protection also determine the conditions for spending a core in Midnight Season 2:

  • Loot eligibility - The bonus roll window appears after content from which your character can receive loot. Nightmare-difficulty Prey Hunts belong to this content along with Season 2 raid bosses, Mythic+ keys, and Bountiful Delves.
  • Specialization and difficulty - The game compiles a reward pool based on your current specialization and the difficulty level of the run, key, or raid you've completed. A different specialization of the same class receives its own set of items.
  • Bonus Loot window - The Bonus Loot label in the loot window displays your pool when you hover over it. We recommend checking this list before every bonus roll on Nightmare, as the pool changes after each new reward.
  • Exchange limit - The weekly exchange at the Catalyst gives your character one additional Nebulous Voidcore per week, regardless of the number of runs, keys, or raids you complete. This limit does not set the number of rolls from them or the currency cap.
  • Duplicate protection - Each reward from a roll leaves the pool for that difficulty and your specialization. This protection remains in effect until you've collected all items from that pool and does not take away the items your character got from previous bonus rolls at that difficulty.
  • Prey Journey rank - You can check the Prey Journey rank you need for Afflicted and Tormented Souls in the Journeys tab of the Adventure Guide, next to the Season 2 reward track progress. Patch 12.1.5 gives characters below Rank 4 a full rank for each run.
  • Champion Chest and other containers - The chance to obtain Corrosive Souls from the first four Preyhunter's containers per week (including the Champion Chest) does not limit the bonus roll to four attempts.

Declining the roll in the Bonus Loot window leaves the core in your stock until the next activity. This core will work later for a Season 2 raid boss, a Mythic+ key, or a Bountiful Delve, where each content type has its own reward pool for your specialization.
