WoW Forever Dalaran Attunement for Horde and Alliance
WoW Forever Dalaran Attunement is a quest chain that leads to the Dalaran Sewer Key for a new dungeon. Each faction has its own quest chain (the Horde starts in Tarren Mill, and the Alliance in Southshore). Both routes converge at the Image of Archmage Modera near Lordamere Lake, where the character receives the key to the City of Dalaran upon acceptance of Heart of Disruption. The Horde route is longer and includes the Grimy Key as an intermediate step.
Blizzard is launching WoW Forever on November 4, 2026. Players can find the attunement rules prior to this date in Blizzard’s official dungeon overview, the database entries for quests for both factions, and the developers’ beta notes. The latest beta builds were still changing access to the city and portals. That’s why any observations from the beta may differ from the rules on live servers.
WoW Forever Dalaran Attunement Requirements
Blizzard recommends the City of Dalaran for level 28–33 groups in the official WoW Forever overview of new dungeons. The remaining attunement requirements (starting NPCs, quests, and minimum levels in the database entries) differ between the Horde and the Alliance until the character receives the key from Modera’s projection:
| Attunement Stage | Horde | Alliance |
|---|---|---|
| Starting NPC | Magus Wordeen Voidglare | Emissary Jacques |
| Starting Location | Tarren Mill | Southshore |
| Starting Quest | Prison Break In | An Alarming Request |
| Second Starting Quest | Key to the City | None |
| Turn-in to Modera | Blood in the Streets | An Alarming Request |
| Key Handout | Heart of Disruption | Heart of Disruption |
| Minimum Level to Start (DB) | 30 | 30 |
| Minimum Heart Level (DB) | 24 | 24 |
| Dungeon Level Range (Blizzard) | 28–33 | 28–33 |
These three levels describe different attunement thresholds. Heart of Disruption’s level 24 minimum does not unlock earlier starting quests for the character, which require level 30 in the DB entries for both factions. We did not find any instance entry thresholds in these sources.
Horde Quest Chain
The Horde prequest leads the character from Magus Wordeen Voidglare in Tarren Mill to the Image of Archmage Modera. This chain begins with two parallel quests from Wordeen. It then goes through Dalaran Patrols and Blood in the Streets until you accept the Horde version of Heart of Disruption at the projection on the northern side of the city. No records confirm that the key requires Stone Tokens and Bracers of Binding.
Prison Break In and Key to the City
Both of Wordeen’s starting quests (Prison Break In and Key to the City) take the character to the Lordamere Internment Camp in the Alterac Mountains. You’ll need five NPCs, locations, and items for the two quests:
- Forsaken fugitives - Four Forsaken stole artifacts from the Undercity vault and fled to Dalaran. The city’s mages are holding the fugitives in quarantine at Lordamere Internment Camp.
- Bloodstone Wedge, Marble, Shard, and Oval - The Prison Break In quest requires one artifact of each type. You’ll take all four items from the fugitives in the camp.
- Warden’s Footlocker - The warden’s chest stands in the same camp. Inside lies the Grimy Key for the Key to the City quest.
- Grimy Key - The game marks this item as a Unique quest item. This key alone cannot open the dungeon gate.
- Magus Wordeen Voidglare - You turn in both quests to him in Tarren Mill. The DB entry places Dalaran Patrols in the quest chain after Prison Break In.
Blizzard ported Prison Break In from Classic with the same four Bloodstones. The developers added Key to the City to WoW Forever. Its text in the DB entry lists the objective as the Dalaran Sewer Key, although the character retrieves the Grimy Key for Wordeen from the Warden’s Footlocker.
Dalaran Patrols and Blood in the Streets
The second half of the Horde prequest (Dalaran Patrols and Blood in the Streets) takes the character from the fugitives’ camp to Modera’s projection on the northern side of the city near Lordamere Lake. This part of the Horde attunement consists of five steps:
- Dalaran Patrols - The primary Forever DB entry asks you to kill six Dalaran Summoners and 12 Elemental Slaves in the ruins around the city. Some beta materials mention eight Elemental Slaves.
- Turn-in at Tarren Mill - You turn in Dalaran Patrols to Wordeen. Blood in the Streets mentions this patrol sweep in its text.
- Blood in the Streets - The quest asks you to find a way into Dalaran along Lordamere Lake. Wordeen sends you to the sewers at the city’s northern border with a key from the camp.
- Image of Archmage Modera - The projection near these sewers accepts Blood in the Streets. Her wards do not let the Grimy Key into the city.
- Heart of Disruption - Modera gives you the Horde version of the quest and places the Dalaran Sewer Key in your inventory upon acceptance. She promises in the quest text to enchant your key so it can pass through her wards.
We recommend checking the number of Elemental Slaves against the counter in your quest log, as the live server will display the current objective. Our ChaosBoost team helps Horde characters with Dalaran attunement through all stages of the Wordeen quest chain (from Prison Break In and Key to the City to the meeting with Modera’s projection). You won’t have to solo clear patrols near the city walls.
Alliance Quest Chain
The Alliance attunement route is shorter than the Horde’s and begins in Southshore with Emissary Jacques. Alliance characters complete four steps on the way from Southshore through the Hillsbrad Foothills to Modera’s projection at Lordamere Lake to obtain the key:
- Emissary Jacques - A Kirin Tor emissary issues An Alarming Request in Southshore. The database entry for this quest requires level 30.
- An Alarming Request - Jacques explains that the city’s ley lines have malfunctioned and asks you to find Archmage Modera’s projection at Lordamere Lake.
- Image of Archmage Modera - The projection accepts An Alarming Request. She offers the Alliance version of Heart of Disruption in response.
- Heart of Disruption - Modera places the Dalaran Sewer Key in your inventory upon acceptance of the quest. She asks you to return the Arcane Mote from the dungeon to her.
Blizzard refers to An Alarming Request as the start of the mandatory attunement chain for the Alliance in the official WoW Forever dungeon overview. Friend of the Kirin Tor follows Heart of Disruption in the DB series. You don't need to complete this quest to obtain the key for the first time, because Modera places the key in the character’s inventory upon acceptance of Heart of Disruption at Lordamere Lake.
Getting the Dalaran Sewer Key
Dalaran Sewer Key (a new item in WoW Forever) appears in the character’s inventory upon acceptance of Heart of Disruption from the Image of Archmage Modera before you enter the dungeon. The Grimy Key from the Horde chain differs from it in terms of origin, properties, and effect on the grate:
| Parameter | Grimy Key | Dalaran Sewer Key |
|---|---|---|
| Item | Grimy Key | Dalaran Sewer Key |
| Faction | Horde | Horde and Alliance |
| Source | Warden’s Footlocker | Heart of Disruption |
| Time of Acquisition | Loot at camp | Accepting Heart |
| Properties | Quest item, Unique | Key, Unique, BoP |
| Non-consumable | No data | Present in the entry |
| Dungeon Gate | Does not open | Opens |
Heart of Disruption requires the Arcane Mote from the dungeon after you get the key. The character turns in the Horde version to Magus Wordeen Voidglare in Tarren Mill after the fight inside the dungeon (the Alliance version ends at the Image of Modera). A BoP flag binds the Dalaran Sewer Key to the character who accepted the quest.
Does Every Group Member Need a Key?
The editorial beta guide describes a group run with a single key holder. This observation does not yet prove that the game removes personal entry requirements on live servers. The official dungeon overview also does not mention this rule. We recommend keeping at least one player with a key in the group, because the locked sewer gate will not let the group through without it.
Dungeon Entrance and City Access
The City of Dalaran dungeon and the city in the WoW Forever open world operate under different rules. This dungeon lies in the Alterac Mountains and has a dungeon entrance via the sewers, according to Blizzard’s overview. The NPC record for Image of Archmage Modera places the projection on the Silverpine Forest map, although she herself stands on the northern side of Dalaran near Lordamere Lake and the sewer entrance. Blizzard denied the Horde free access to this city as early as the beta test.
What Changed for Horde?
Kaivax (Blizzard community manager) wrote in the WoW Forever Beta Development Notes thread (with “Updated October 26” in the title) that the city’s guards attack the Horde on sight in the open world. The post itself came out on October 16 at 00:15 UTC (which was the evening of the previous day in the U.S.). This change did not affect access to the City of Dalaran dungeon. Early beta reports about a neutral city for the Horde after a dungeon clear are now outdated. No source has yet confirmed a safe turn-in of Shrewd Negotiations (the Horde follow-up to Heart).
Missing Quests and Portal Problems
Known causes for missing quests, keys, or portals include turn-in order, key mix-ups, and beta patches. Each of the six symptoms has an initial verification through database entries or official Blizzard posts, as well as its own known limits for WoW Forever’s live servers:
| Symptom | Verification | Known Boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Wordeen without a quest | Level 30, past turn-ins | Full conditions unknown |
| Modera does not grant Heart | Previous quest turn-in | Server flags unknown |
| Grimy Key at the gate | Sewer Key in inventory | Known from Heart text |
| Waiting for the key after the boss | Accepting Heart of Disruption | Known from DB entry |
| Guards attack Horde | Path through sewer entrance | Official Blizzard post |
| No portal from Stormwind | Portal on live server | End-of-beta observation |
The portal from Stormwind to Dalaran for High Order Skyborne disappeared in the latest beta build, although the return portal from Dalaran to Stormwind remained in place. This observation does not guarantee anything for live servers after November 4. Our ChaosBoost team conducts City of Dalaran dungeon runs after we verify your key.
