WoW Forever PvP Progression Guide

WoW Forever PvP progression: Alliance and Horde characters in Theramore and Darkspear Battle Tabards

WoW Forever PvP begins with choosing a ruleset, as this determines where your character fights against the opposing faction and whether your account can play for both sides. From there, World of Warcraft Forever PvP progression follows two scales (Honor and Rank Points), which lead through 14 ranks to titles, sets, and arsenal weapons. Characters earn progress on these scales across four battlegrounds, including the new Darkspear Islands, and through quests in the Field of Honor journal. There are no rated arenas in the game, though duels and the Gurubashi Arena are available for non-queued fights.

Since each set piece costs Honor, the WoW Forever Honor Farm Boost from our WoW Forever boosting services takes this farming off your hands. Our team earns Honor up to the 25,000 cap in battlegrounds so you don't have to wait in queues for every purchase.

How WoW Forever PvP Works

How WoW Forever PvP works: the Alliance Brigadier General before a snowy battle

The World of Warcraft Forever PvP system tracks progress on two independent scales (Honor for purchases and Rank Points for 14 ranks with a weekly cap). Both scales have replaced the Classic ladder, where players competed against the entire server and lost their rank every week. Rank Points do not decrease during the season. Spending on gear does not slow down rank progression, since the currencies do not convert into one another.

The main source of points is battlegrounds, where the new Darkspear Islands has been added to the three classic maps (Warsong Gulch, Arathi Basin, and Alterac Valley). Remaining progress comes from open-world fights and Field of Honor quests, since there are no rated arenas or rated battlegrounds in the game.

PvP or PvE Ruleset

WoW Forever PvP or PvE ruleset: Stormwind City Guard facing an Orgrimmar Grunt

Since there are no realms, the question of “WoW Forever PvP or PvE” boils down to choosing a ruleset, which determines where you can be attacked in the open world. The eponymous ruleset (with its own flag and faction rules) serves as a separate WoW Forever PvP server:

RulesetWorld PvPFeatures
NormalFlag in enemy territoryBoth factions on the account
PvPFlag outside your territoryOne faction per account
RoleplayFlag in enemy territoryName and behavior rules
Roleplay PvPFlag outside your territoryAdded at launch on November 4

Since battlegrounds mix players from all rulesets except Hardcore, choosing a WoW Forever PvP or PvE server does not affect Honor, ranks, or sets. But on the PvP ruleset, fights can begin in most zones above level 15, as they are contested. Hardcore operates as a separate ecosystem and does not interact with other rulesets, even in battlegrounds.

Faction Lock and Balance

WoW Forever faction balance on the PvP ruleset begins with a faction lock, where your first character locks the account out of the other faction. This restriction prevents you from scouting enemy groups using an alt from the opposing side. I would keep both factions on Normal or Roleplay, where the faction lock does not apply.

WoW Forever faction imbalance cannot be fixed by transferring servers, because there are no realms in the game. Instead, following the model of Season of Discovery, the game can suspend character creation for the dominant faction.

Layering and World PvP

The game's ruleset functions like a megaserver, which World of Warcraft Forever layering mechanics divide into layers to prevent zones from becoming overcrowded. Players on the Blizzard forums described how layers interfered with open-world fights:

  • Layer change - an opponent would end up in a different layer in the middle of a fight.
  • Zone boundary - a player being chased would go beyond it and disappear.

In a podcast on October 15, 2026, Blizzard referred to the work on layering for fights on the WoW Forever PvP server as “small incremental steps.”

Honor and Rank Points

Honor and Rank Points in WoW Forever PvP: battlemaster James Battlewing with Honor and Rank icons

World of Warcraft Forever PvP progression distinguishes between the two currencies, since Honor is spent at vendors, while Rank Points are used to advance through ranks and cannot be spent. Progress toward these is earned through four sources:

  • Battlegrounds - a victory yields both currencies, bonus Honor, and three map marks, while a defeat yields one mark.
  • Player Kills - each defeated opponent from the opposing faction adds Honor.
  • Field of Honor - journal quests and other PvP quests give points for both scales.
  • Holiday Week - the holiday week's battleground gives both currencies with a bonus.

A weekly cap limits Rank Points and increases each week up to 24,750 points at Rank 14. The For Great Honor perk from the Resourcefulness branch of the Legacy system increases the gain of Honor, which accumulates up to a cap of 25,000. I recommend spending Honor on set pieces throughout the season, since the currency isn't earned beyond the cap.

PvP Ranks and Rewards

WoW Forever PvP ranks and rewards: Black War Steed, Alliance Battle Standard and Greater Insignia

World of Warcraft Forever PvP divides the season into 14 ranks with Alliance and Horde titles, where each rank unlocks its own reward for Honor. The game tracks rank progress using Rank Points starting from the beginning of the season:

Alliance TitleHorde TitleRankTotal Rank PointsRewardLegacy Point
PrivateScout1750Faction TabardNo

MarshalGeneral1219,100Shoulder and Legs SealsNo
Field MarshalWarlord1321,750Head and Chest SealsYes
Grand MarshalHigh Warlord1424,750Epic WeaponsYes

From this ladder, I would highlight three rewards:

  • Greater Insignia - a Rank 2 trinket that removes all slows and crowd control effects once every 5 minutes.
  • Battle Standard - Blizzard allows you to place a Rank 7 standard in battlegrounds, where it increases the group's maximum health by 15%, while in the open world it does not work.
  • Full set appearance - Rank 13 is sufficient for this.

I'd make Rank 13 my first goal and save Rank 14 for the arsenal.

Grand Marshal and High Warlord

Rank 14 gives the titles Grand Marshal (Alliance) and High Warlord (Horde) and requires 24,750 Rank Points (that's an additional 3,000 points beyond Rank 13). This rank unlocks an arsenal of 22 epic Premier Grand Marshal's and Premier High Warlord's items (weapons, shields, and off-hand items) with an ilvl of 65 and a level 60 requirement. For the Horde, it includes the two-handed Premier High Warlord's Battle Axe.

The Grand Marshal Boost and High Warlord Boost take a level 60 character to Rank 14 in their faction, as our booster clears the weekly cap in battlegrounds and journal quests. An arsenal item or an epic set comes as an option. You won't have to set aside evenings to grind your way to Rank 14.

WoW Forever PvP Gear Sets

WoW Forever PvP gear sets: gnome mage in Lieutenant Commander's and Field Marshal's Regalia

The WoW Forever PvP gear is sold in-game for Honor in two versions, blue (rare) and epic. Versions of WoW Forever PvP sets differ in item level, requirements, and set name:

ParameterBlue VersionEpic Version
ilvl6065
Character Level5560
Rank RequirementNoneSeal Rank
Alliance SetLieutenant Commander'sField Marshal's
Horde SetChampion'sWarlord's

The name of each epic piece of World of Warcraft Forever PvP gear includes the rank title of its seal, such as Premier Knight-Champion's Silk Footwraps (Rank 9) or Premier Marshal's Silk Leggings (Rank 12). Premier Silk Crown for the mage is part of the six-piece Lieutenant Commander's Regalia set, where the four-piece bonus reduces Blink's cooldown by 2 seconds. Blizzard has addressed spec gaps with three sets for shamans (healer, melee, and caster).

The best pieces also require Marks of Honor from a specific map. I recommend checking which marks your item needs before you start farming.

Upgrading Blue Gear to Epic

Each epic piece in WoW Forever PvP sets requires a blue piece from the same slot and a Premier Emboldened Seal of the appropriate rank. Upgrading a slot involves four steps:

  1. You purchase the Premier blue piece with Honor.
  2. Your character earns the seal's rank (Rank 8 for wrist and waist, Rank 13 for head and chest).
  3. The seal is purchased for the specific slot, such as the Premier Emboldened Legs Seal for legs at Rank 12.
  4. Exchanging the blue piece and the seal gives the epic version of that slot.

The WoW Forever PvP Gear Boost covers the first step, as our team collects Honor for the blue Lieutenant Commander's or Champion's gear (up to eight Premier ilvl 60 pieces for your spec). Epic versions (Field Marshal's or Warlord's) are optional. You won't have to save up currency for each piece while your rank progress moves toward the seals.

Battlegrounds and Level Brackets

WoW Forever battlegrounds and level brackets: Darkspear Islands and the four Marks of Honor

The game matches players on four battlegrounds (three classic ones and the new Darkspear Islands) with their own level brackets. Maps vary in size, entry requirements, and the factions that give reputation:

BattlegroundSizeMin. LevelBracketsAlliance ReputationHorde Reputation
Warsong Gulch10v10106Silverwing SentinelsWarsong Outriders
Arathi Basin15v15205The League of ArathorThe Defilers
Darkspear Islands15v15304Theramore Expeditionary ForceDarkspear Raiders
Alterac Valley40v40511Stormpike GuardFrostwolf Clan

Blizzard has reduced Honor in Alterac Valley and increased it on the other maps to prevent players from farming nothing but AV. Warsong Gulch is accessible starting at level 10, while Alterac Valley waits until level 51. Our level 1-60 leveling guide details the path to reaching this threshold.

Queues and Premade Groups

The battleground queue is shared across all rulesets except Hardcore. You can join the queue at the battlemaster in your capital city or at the map portal:

  • Stormwind - the Alliance battlemaster is located in the throne room of Stormwind Keep (type /way 80 38.5 in chat).
  • Orgrimmar - for the Horde, he's in the Valley of Honor (type /way 79 30.5 in chat).
  • Open World - the map portal places you in the same queue.

Premade groups in this queue face off against other premade groups. The game won't let you form one with a player from a different ruleset.

Marks of Honor and Reputations

Each map has its own Marks of Honor (Warsong Gulch Mark of Honor, Darkspear Islands Mark of Honor, and others), but the rules are the same:

  • Reward cost - marks are included in the price of some items.
  • Quests - you turn them in for experience and reputation. The Darkspear Islands Clash quest from Alliance Brigadier General accepts three DI marks.
  • Limit - a character can hold up to 30 of each type of mark.
  • Exalted - reaching this reputation level on a map grants a Legacy achievement and a Legacy Point to your account.

I would save the map marks associated with the item I need and turn in the rest to reach Exalted. The three classic maps give Master of Warsong Gulch, Master of Arathi Basin, and Master of Alterac Valley. Fourth comes Master of Darkspear Islands for reputation on the new map.

Darkspear Islands Battleground

Darkspear Islands is a new 15v15 battleground for levels 30-60 off the coast of Dustwallow Marsh, where the Darkspear Raiders (Horde) battle the Theramore Expeditionary Force (Alliance). On this map, which resembles Eye of the Storm, four things are important:

  • Capture points - there are four of them, and each additional point held speeds up scoring.
  • Flag - players carry it from the center of the map to their captured point for extra points.
  • Victory - the first team to reach 2,000 points wins the match.
  • Faction bases - Merchant Coast (Horde) and Northwatch (Alliance) put you in the queue with a portal into the fight.

There, Bryanna Embreeze in Northwatch Hold (/way 63.4 58.6) and Creeg Bothunk north of Ratchet (/way 65.0 34.6) sell trinkets at the Friendly reputation level and cloaks, rings, and necklaces at the Honored level. Revered adds weapons, while Exalted unlocks gloves, shoulders, and quests for the Darkspear Battle Tabard or Theramore Battle Tabard.

Seasons and Field of Honor

Seasons and Field of Honor in WoW Forever PvP: Premier Grand Marshal's Glaive and weekly achievements

The game resets ranks at the end of each season, while Legacy progress is kept on the account. Blizzard plans to launch new World of Warcraft Forever seasons every four months, with a season refresh in the roadmap for the spring and summer of 2027. Each new season unlocks its own cosmetics and gear at Rank 14.

Every week of the season, the Field of Honor journal gives quests for Honor and Rank Points. Quests for the fourth, seventh, and tenth weeks give an additional Legacy Point and carry over to future seasons. The WoW Forever PvP Season Journey Boost completes the journal quests for weeks you choose or the entire season, giving three Legacy Points. You won't have to schedule your evenings around the journal every week.

PvP Legacy Challenges

WoW Forever PvP gives you 12 Legacy Points from 65 Legacy system challenges across three categories:

  • Ranks - these give five points, with the first point awarded at Rank 3.
  • Battleground Reputation - reaching Exalted with the factions of four battlegrounds adds four points.
  • Field of Honor - weekly challenges yield the remaining three points.

This progress is account-wide. These challenges cannot be completed in Hardcore mode.

Is There an Arena in WoW Forever?

WoW Forever arena: Short John Mithril of Gurubashi Arena with the Arena Master trinkets

The WoW Forever arena mode was not included in the game, nor were rated battlegrounds. Arenas first appeared in WoW with The Burning Crusade. Players are asking to add them in the Add Arena to WoW Forever thread on the Blizzard forums.

The closest substitute for the WoW Forever arena is the Gurubashi Arena in Stranglethorn Vale, which has three features:

  • Free-for-all - in the arena, you can attack any player from either faction, except for members of your own group.
  • Arena Treasure Chest - a chest that drops in the center of the ring at scheduled intervals always contains an Arena Master trinket.
  • Arena Grandmaster - in this quest, Short John Mithril exchanges 12 Arena Master trinkets for an Arena Grand Master trinket.

I'd head to the chest as a group, since you can't attack your own allies in the ring.

Duels and the Forever Open

Forever Open took place on October 17-18, 2026, as a WoW Forever PvP tournament featuring 1v1 duels among level 30 characters, with a prize pool of $100,000. The tournament was organized by Tips Out, with broadcasts by Esfand and Xaryu. For the second day, Blizzard announced an official duel arena in the restricted Hyjal Crater, where participants were to be transported by a GM. Warlockguy took the victory and $50,000 by defeating Neepzen in the best-of-five final, which pitted two Warlocks against each other.

Skip the Honor Grind

Skip the honor grind in WoW Forever PvP: three Rank 11 Black War mounts

The WoW Forever PvP Boost category collects services for every progression goal, from Honor to Rank 14, including these five:

  • WoW Forever Honor Farm Boost - Honor up to the 25,000 cap with marks and Rank Points, delivered via self-play or a pilot.
  • Black War Mount Boost - Rank 11 grants the title of Commander or Lieutenant General and a Black War mount.
  • WoW Forever Leveling + PvP Gear Bundle - a pilot levels the character from 1 to 60 and collects an eight-piece ilvl 60 Premier blue set, while an epic set is available as an option.
  • WoW Forever Arathi Basin Wins Boost - a 15v15 victory in our premade team gives three AB marks and reputation with The League of Arathor or The Defilers.
  • Master of Alterac Valley Boost - reaching Exalted with the Stormpike Guard or Frostwolf Clan grants the account a Legacy Point.

Our team divides the amount of farming beyond the cap into rounds, between which you spend currency at the vendor.

WoW Forever PvP FAQ: Premier High Warlord's Battle Axe and Premier Grand Marshal's Sunderer

WoW Forever PvP FAQ

How long does Rank 14 take?

Rank 14 becomes available starting in the tenth week of the season, when the weekly cap reaches 24,750 Rank Points. According to the cap chart on Icy Veins, the first week allows you to reach Rank 3, the fourth week Rank 7, and the seventh week Rank 11.

Where are the honor vendors?

Rank reward vendors are located in Champions' Hall in Stormwind and in the Hall of Legends in Orgrimmar. The Player vs. Player tab in the character window (C) will show which rewards are already available to you.

Can you change your ruleset later?

Changing your World of Warcraft Forever PvP vs PvE choice requires a new character, because there's no transfer between rulesets, although collections and Legacy Points are shared across the account (Hardcore has its own rules). The exception is a deceased Hardcore character, which can be transferred to another ruleset.

How do you turn off PvP flagging?

The flag is removed after 5 minutes in friendly territory, and if you enabled it via /pvp, typing /pvp again will remove it with the same timer. On the PvP ruleset, entering contested or enemy territory will re-enable it.

What level do Black War mounts require?

Black War mounts require level 40, Rank 11, a race from your faction, and the riding skill corresponding to the mount type (Horse Riding for the Black War Steed, Undead Horsemanship for the Red Skeletal Warhorse). Our gold farming guide will help you collect the funds needed for training.

Is Horde better at PvP?

The Horde does not have any class-specific advantages, since both factions receive paladins and shamans (Undead Paladin for the Horde, Dwarf Shaman for the Alliance). Blizzard maintains WoW Forever PvP faction balance on the PvP ruleset through systems modeled after Season of Discovery. The racial abilities of both factions were adjusted on October 26-27.
