Monster Hunter Wilds Weapons Tier List
Monster Hunter Wilds has 14 weapon types, each with its unique playstyle. While each one is viable in the hands of a skilled hunter, some are more powerful or easier to use. Use this as a reference when choosing what to master (and remember, ChaosBoost pros can unlock them all for you!):
S-Tier (Top Picks):
- Bow: The Bow is currently the best due to its insane damage output and versatility. It allows you to deal precise, continuous damage from range with high mobility.
- Long Sword: The Long Sword is a well-rounded melee weapon with good reach, speed and damage. It’s a Long Sword but more agile.
- Sword & Shield: This is the most versatile weapon in Monster Hunter Wilds. The Sword & Shield (SnS) lets you guard with a shield, do quick slashes and elemental attacks with the sword and even stun monsters with shield bash combos – all in one kit.
A-Tier (Strong Choices):
- Great Sword: The Great Sword has the highest single-hit damage. Each charged swing can deal massive damage, especially on vulnerable monster parts.
- Dual Blades: Dual Blades turns you into a blade tornado, hitting monsters with a flurry of fast attacks. They excel at applying elemental damage or status effects because of their high attack speed.
- Hunting Horn: Once considered a support weapon, the Hunting Horn in Wilds is a serious damage dealer and team buff.
- Hammer: The Hammer is a pure damage dealer focusing on knocking monsters out. By charging up powerful swings and smashing a monster’s head, a hammer user can stun even the largest monsters, creating huge openings for more damage.
- Insect Glaive: The Insect Glaive is all about mobility and aerial combat. This polearm lets you vault into the air at will, hit monsters from above and avoid ground hazards.
- Gunlance: The Gunlance is a defensive lance with explosive firepower. It can guard like a Lance, then shell back at monsters with attacks that ignore monster armor.
- Heavy Bowgun: The Heavy Bowgun (HBG) is the artillery of Monster Hunter. It’s a ranged weapon that can deal massive damage with various ammo types (piercing rounds, spread shots, explosive shells, etc.).
How to Unlock Weapons in Monster Hunter Wilds
Normally a player needs to invest a lot of time to unlock and craft the best upgrades for each type. Boosting your weapons arsenal in Monster Hunter Wilds is a long process that involves progression, farming resources and crafting.
- Progress Through Story Quests: As you complete the main story and key assignments you’ll unlock new areas and face stronger monsters. Monster Hunter Wilds limits the weapons you can craft to early-tier gear at first.
- Hunt New Monsters: Each item in Monster Hunter is tied to monster materials. To unlock a weapon or an upgrade path you usually need to hunt the monster that drops specific materials.
- Gather and Mine Resources: Beyond monster parts don’t neglect other materials. Some weapons require ores, insects or bones from the environment. Explore each region’s gathering points (mines, bonepiles, etc.) to collect these items.
- Forge Base Weapons at the Smithy: Visit the Smithy (the crafting workshop in your hub town) to forge weapons. At first you’ll craft base versions of each type using common materials. Crafting a base weapon usually unlocks its upgrade tree.
- Upgrade Weapons Step by Step: Once a weapon’s tree is visible you can start upgrading it. Upgrading usually requires a combination of monster parts from increasingly stronger monsters.
- Complete Optional Quests for Unique Weapons: Monster Hunter Wilds has optional content like Arena challenges, event quests or special assignments that can unlock unique variants.
- Rinse and Repeat (Grind): Unlocking and fully upgrading multiple weapons is a grind. You’ll be hunting the same monsters over and over to farm enough materials (those rare drops like Rathian Ruby or Zinogre Electrofur can be tough!).
