WoW Forever Mounts and Riding Costs
WoW Forever mounts wait for characters at levels 40 and 60, where their race's riding trainer sells the riding skill along with the first mount. It costs 100 and 1,000 gold, because Blizzard shifted the price from the mount itself to the skill. This skill has no flight rank, since World of Warcraft Forever focuses on ground travel. Players can receive racial, class-specific, new, and rare mounts through various means.
Most of the gold and time is spent at the level cap, with its weeks of PvP and hundreds of hours of Legacy gameplay. Our team takes care of this part of the journey in the WoW Forever Mounts Boost category.
WoW Forever Mount Level Requirements
The WoW Forever mount level starts at 40, when the character purchases Apprentice Riding along with their first mount and gets a +60% riding speed bonus. Its second milestone is at level 60, where Journeyman Riding increases the bonus to +100%. Your skill does not increase beyond this rank, as the level cap in Forever is 60. The path to both milestones consists of five steps:
- The character reaches level 40 by following the route in the 1-60 leveling guide.
- You'll need 100 gold by this point, as that's what the trainer charges for Apprentice Riding.
- Find a riding trainer of your race (for example, Randal Hunter at Eastvale Logging Camp for Humans).
- For this amount, the trainer teaches Apprentice Riding and gives you your race's first mount in a color of your choice.
- At the cap, Journeyman Riding for 1,000 gold also grants you your first epic mount.
Paladins and Warlocks receive level 40 and 60 mounts through class quests, although Summon Felsteed and Summon Warhorse require the same level 40. I advise these classes not to rush to the trainer, because the quest covers their first milestone.
Will World of Warcraft Forever Have Flying Mounts?
There are no flying mounts in Forever, nor will there ever be, as the developers announced at BlizzCon 2026. World of Warcraft Forever flying mounts don't suit a game that revolves around its world and ground travel; after all, with flight, players would skip entire zones and their dangers. Blizzard has enshrined this decision in its design principles alongside the decision against level scaling, under the motto “We believe the world should still feel like Classic.” Characters can still fly along flight paths, where the Legacy perk Frequent Flier reduces the cost and speeds up flights.
WoW Forever Mount Cost and Training
The main component of the WoW Forever mount cost is training with a riding trainer, the price of which includes the first mount. Even a steed purchased from the store does not waive this cost. The skill increases from 75 (Apprentice Riding) to 150 (Journeyman Riding) for swift versions. Ranks differ in training cost, the price of the next color variant, and speed:
| Rank | Level | Training | First Mount | Next Mount | Speed |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Apprentice Riding | 40 | 100 gold | included in training | 20 gold | +60% |
| Journeyman Riding | 60 | 1,000 gold | included in training | 200 gold | +100% |
The WoW Forever mount price for new color variants from the race vendor remains low because the character pays the main portion of the cost to the trainer. Designer Tim Jones explained the high WoW Forever mount training cost to Kotaku by noting that the developers shifted the cost from the mount itself to the training so that players wouldn't receive the skill for free at level 40. With the Epic Mount Boost, our team purchases the Journeyman Riding skill along with your race's first epic mount of your choice and uses gold from your character's farming, our own reserves, or your own funds. Our gold farming guide shows you where to collect 1,000 gold on your own.
Reputation and Bartering Discounts
Honored reputation with your race's faction gives a 10% discount on both training costs and that race's mounts. A second discount is given by the Legacy perk Bartering in the Professions tree, which reduces prices at merchants by up to 10%. The two discounts apply to different purchases:
| Discount | Training | Mounts |
|---|---|---|
| Honored | 10% | 10% |
| Bartering | not applicable | up to 10% |
| Honored and Bartering | 10% from Honored | up to 20% |
Method sees the benefit of Bartering in additional color variants. I recommend purchasing Journeyman Riding after reaching Honored status with your race's faction, because Bartering does not reduce the cost of training.
Mount Speed and Speed Items
WoW Forever mount speed increases in two tiers, up to +60% with Apprentice Riding and up to +100% with Journeyman Riding. There is no third tier because Forever does not feature flying. Beyond this +100%, riding speed can be further increased by five items:
- Gift of Galloping - A level 60 consumable (BoP) sold by Mister Graphed (Agent of the Black Market) in Powderfuse Port in Riverglades for 150 gold. Its +10% riding speed stacks with other bonuses and lasts for 360 hours on a timer that continues to run even while offline.
- Carrot on a Stick - This BoP trinket adds +3% to mount speed while equipped.
- Mithril Spurs - A blacksmith with 215 Blacksmithing crafts these spurs, which attach to boots and give a small bonus to riding speed.
- Enchant Gloves - Riding Skill - An enchanter creates this glove enchantment using a Large Radiant Shard and two Dream Dust with a Runed Truesilver Rod. The riding speed bonus it provides is small.
- Wintersaber Hide Lined Gloves - These level 54 BoE cloth gloves give +6% riding speed in Winterspring.
Mount Changes From Classic
The main WoW Forever mount changes concern the cost, which Blizzard shifted from the mount itself to the skill training, making the skill more expensive than in WoW Classic.
| What | WoW Classic | Forever |
|---|---|---|
| Training and mount at 40 | Skill: 20 gold, mount: 80 gold | Apprentice Riding: 100 gold with mount |
| Next mount at 40 | 80 gold | 20 gold |
| Discounts | Honored and PvP Rank 3: 10% each | Honored: 10% |
| Binding | Binds when used, item stays in bag | Binds when used, account collection |
At level 40, the total cost remains the same because Classic also charged 100 gold for the skill and mount (Blizzard Watch). The horse item requires Horse Riding, since both the racial skill and the Exalted requirement for a different race were carried over from Classic. In Classic, a player with a discount would buy a steed for a friend and transfer the Binds when used item before its first use.
Racial Mounts and Riding Trainers
Characters learn riding from their racial trainer, while WoW Forever racial mounts are purchased from a vendor next to the trainer. The item for such a mount requires the corresponding racial skill (Horse Riding for the Chestnut Mare Bridle, Galestrider Riding for the Empyrean Galestrider). Trainers and vendors for the nine races are located in the following places:
| Race | Mounts | Trainer and Vendor | Location and /way |
|---|---|---|---|
| Human | horses | Randal Hunter and Katie Hunter | Eastvale Logging Camp, Elwynn Forest, 84.3 64.9 |
| Dwarf | rams | Ultham Ironhorn and Veron Amberstill | Amberstill Ranch, Dun Morogh, 63.7 50.1 |
| Gnome | mechanostriders | Binjy Featherwhistle and Milli Featherwhistle | Steelgrill's Depot, Dun Morogh, 49.2 48.1 |
| Night Elf | sabers | Jartsam and Lelanai | Cenarion Enclave, Darnassus, 38.4 17.0 |
| Skyborne | Galestrider | Genn Fairweather | Fairweather Stables, Zephras Isle, 53.8 81.2 |
| Orc | wolves | Kildar and Ogunaro Wolfrunner | Valley of Honor, Orgrimmar, 69.4 13.1 |
| Troll | raptors | Xar'Ti and Zjolnir | Sen'jin Village, Durotar, 55.3 75.5 |
| Tauren | kodos | Kar Stormsinger and Harb Clawhoof | Bloodhoof Village, Mulgore, 47.7 58.5 |
| Undead | skeletal horses | Velma Warnam and Zachariah Post | Brill, Tirisfal Glades, 60.1 52.6 |
Until you reach Exalted reputation with a faction of a different race, its trainer and vendor will not serve you. A second Human horse vendor (Unger Statforth) is located in Menethil Harbor (Wetlands, /way 8.6 54.3) without a trainer and carries the Black Stallion Bridle, which other vendors do not have. The same NPCs sell the Swift variants at the cap, such as the Swift Palomino and Great White Kodo. I wouldn't go out of my way to reach Exalted with a foreign capital just for a color variant when your own race has three or four of its own.
Skyborne Galestriders
Skyborne learn to ride from Genn Fairweather (Stablemaster and Riding Trainer) at Fairweather Stables on Zephras Isle (/way 53.8 81.2). Both branches of the race receive their mounts at the same stable, where both the Alliance's High Order and the Horde's Windshapers purchase the WoW Forever Galestrider. The Galestrider lineup is divided as follows:
| Galestrider | Where and When |
|---|---|
| Umber, Stormy, and Empyrean | from Genn at level 40 |
| Swift versions of these color variants | from Genn at level 60 |
| Regal and Swift Regal | datamine from Warcraft Tavern |
The Empyrean Galestrider item (Item Level 40, Binds when used) is labeled Mount (Account-wide) and requires the Galestrider Riding skill, but not a specific race or faction. Skyborne as a race is unlocked by the Skyborne Heroic Pack or a higher-tier edition, that's why the path to obtaining a Galestrider begins with purchasing one of these editions.
Are WoW Forever Mounts Account Wide?
A mount obtained from an item goes into the account-wide collection because the item “teaches you how to summon this mount” and is labeled Mount (Account-wide). Even BoP rewards like Reins of the Pack Kodo, Reins of the Spectral Bear, and Deathcharger's Reins carry this label.
A character can ride a mount from the collection if they meet the item's requirements for level, faction, and skill (the Chestnut Mare Bridle, for example, requires any Alliance race and Horse Riding). An alt character needs their own Apprentice Riding and Journeyman Riding, since each character must purchase these skills on their own. But the Legacy Points for which the track awards the Spectral Bear are shared among all characters on the account outside of Hardcore mode.
Paladin and Warlock Class Mounts
Paladins and Warlocks learn to ride and receive their mounts through class quests instead of the usual training with a trainer. They receive a level 40 steed for free. Level 60 epic quest chains require reagents costing hundreds of gold, though Method admits they may come out cheaper than Journeyman Riding, which costs 1,000 gold. A character summons their class steed using a spell (Summon Felsteed, Summon Warhorse, or their epic versions), which does not take up a bag slot. For these two classes, the main expenses at the cap are for reagents.
Warlock Felsteed and Dreadsteed
A quest from Strahad Farsan in Ratchet unlocks the first WoW Forever warlock mount (Summon Felsteed) at level 40 for warlocks of both factions. The epic WoW Forever Dreadsteed (Summon Dreadsteed) waits at the cap at the end of a five-step quest chain, culminating in the final quest, Dreadsteed of Xoroth:
- The Demon Trainer gives the first quest at level 60 and sends the warlock to Mor'zul Bloodbringer at the Altar of Storms in the northwest of the Burning Steppes.
- Standing next to him is Gorzeeki Wildeyes, who accepts Case of Blood and sells Shadowy Potion and three items needed for the ritual.
- In Felwood, the path leads through Jaedenar to Lord Banehollow, near whom Ur'dan sells Xorothian Stardust.
- The Imp Delivery quest asks you to take the Imp in a Jar to the alchemy lab in Scholomance and return the jar to Gorzeeki Wildeyes.
- The Dreadsteed of Xoroth ritual takes place in Dire Maul West, where the group summons the Xorothian Dreadsteed and kills it so the warlock can bind the horse's spirit.
Purchases from NPCs along this path cost 418 gold in WoW Classic, of which 250 gold could be saved if another warlock already had J'eevee's Jar, Black Lodestone, and Xorothian Glyphs. The biggest material costs in Classic were 35 Black Dragonscale and 30 Raging Beast's Blood. Our Dreadsteed Mount Boost team completes all quests leading up to the ritual and the fight against the Xorothian Dreadsteed in Dire Maul in either Piloted or Self-play mode, and on request adds the reagents and Summon Felsteed. If you're doing the quest chain on your own, I recommend farming the WoW Forever warlock mount alongside other warlocks, because a single ritual completes Dreadsteed of Xoroth for multiple characters.
Paladin Warhorse and Charger
Alliance paladins receive their first WoW Forever paladin mount (Summon Warhorse) at level 40 by completing the quest The Tome of Nobility from Mystic Ward in Ironforge or the Cathedral of Light in Stormwind. In the Summon Charger quest chain at the cap, there are five names to remember:
- Duthorian Rall - The quest chain starts with him at the same Cathedral of Light and leads the paladin to Lord Grayson Shadowbreaker.
- High Priest Rohan - In WoW Classic, it cost 150 gold to purchase Rohan's Exorcism Censer from him, out of the 350 gold required by the three quests in the chain.
- Tendris Warpwood - In Classic, killing this boss in Dire Maul West summoned the Ancient Equine Spirit.
- Judgment and Redemption - The final quest sends the paladin to the Great Ossuary basement in Scholomance, where the Divination Scryer summons spirits, followed by Death Knight Darkreaver.
- Blessed Arcanite Barding - Obtain this item before heading to Scholomance, because you cannot complete the final quest without it.
The Undead Paladin takes a different path to the Charger and receives the Forsaken version of Summon Warhorse at level 40 and Summon Forsaken Charger at 60. Blizzard has identified Bandarion Keep in Whispering Wood (Tirisfal Glades) as the key location of the Forsaken paladins' epic chain. The developers have contrasted Redemption (the path through which Alliance paladins receive the Charger) with Retribution, the path pursued by Forsaken paladins.
New WoW Forever Mounts
World of Warcraft Forever mounts include the entire Classic set, to which the game has added new steeds. Of the 37 new additions identified by Wowhead's datamine on September 21, 2026, the most notable ones fall into four groups:
- The Forsaken version of Summon Warhorse and Summon Forsaken Charger - Undead Paladins get these spells as class mounts at levels 40 and 60.
- Galestrider - The Skyborne have received their own line of racial steeds, including standard and Swift versions.
- New color variants from racial vendors - The Black Skeletal Horse and Ochre Skeletal Warhorse have appeared in Brill, while the White Kodo is now available in Bloodhoof Village. Icy Veins attributes all three color variants to Wrath of the Lich King.
- Devilsaur, Druid Moose, and Warden Saber - The Warcraft Tavern datamine discovered these models on September 16, 2026. That portal cited the source of the Warden Saber as unknown.
Spectral Bear Legacy Reward
Blizzard has designated the WoW Forever Spectral Bear (Reins of the Spectral Bear) as a Legacy system exclusive and a reward for reaching 55 points on the Legacy track. According to the tooltip, this epic mount requires level 60 and Journeyman Riding; it is bound upon pickup (Binds when picked up) and goes into the account collection. Method divides the 65 Legacy challenges into mandatory ones and those that can be skipped, since the bear requires all but ten of them:
| Challenges | Points | Method's Advice |
|---|---|---|
| Levels of the nine classes | 27 | required |
| Six professions | 18 | required |
| Raid challenges | 3 | skip |
| Lord Valthalak quest chain | 1 | skip |
| PvP ranks 13 and 14 | 2 | skip |
| Exalted with Arathi Basin and Warsong Gulch | 2 | skip |
Method estimates the path to the bear will take several hundred hours, since 45 points require characters at the cap and professions at 300. This workload is divided among several Spectral Bear Mount Boost boosters, who work in parallel to guide your account toward 55 points through the challenge plan and, if desired, tackle raid challenges. The Spectral Bear Cub pet and Spectral Bear Tabard are awarded before the bear itself.
Pack Kodo for Merchant's Favor
The epic WoW Forever Pack Kodo (Reins of the Pack Kodo) is sold by Alliance and Horde trade factions for 6,000 Merchant's Favor. Its tooltip requires Exalted reputation with the Alliance's Azeroth Commerce Authority or the Horde's Durotar Supply and Logistics, level 60, and Journeyman Riding. The item binds when picked up, but the kodo is added to the account-wide collection.
Characters earn Merchant's Favor by turning in Waylaid Crates. In my opinion, the Pack Kodo is the most predictable of the rare rewards, as its price does not include a drop chance.
Store Mounts From Edition Packs
Two store mounts are distributed across three editions:
| Edition | Cerulean Prideclaw | Veteran Adventurer's Loyal Companion |
|---|---|---|
| Skyborne Heroic Pack | Yes | No |
| Skyborne Epic Pack | Yes | Yes |
| Warcraft Forever Collection | Yes | Yes |
The Skyborne Heroic Pack also unlocks the Skyborne race. Per its tooltip, the Cerulean Prideclaw is an epic level 60 steed with Journeyman Riding. The Veteran Adventurer's Loyal Companion bear requires just level 40 and Apprentice Riding. Both items are BoP and go into the account collection, though they do not replace the need to purchase the skill from a trainer. Tim Jones explained to Kotaku that the cost is transferred to training because a mount reflects how much time and effort a player has invested in the game.
Black War and Rare Mounts
Epic BoP rewards for the account collection include Black War mounts, Deathcharger's Reins, and Reins of the Winterspring Frostsaber. The path to each is unique: Black War mounts are unlocked through PvP rank, Deathcharger's Reins have appeared among Black Market Auction House lots, and the Frostsaber in Classic was sold by Rivern Frostwind for reputation.
Black War Mounts at Rank 11
Blizzard has dedicated Rank 11 to mounts (Commander for the Alliance and Lieutenant General for the Horde). The Black War Steed Bridle requires level 40 and this rank; it is bind-on-pickup (BoP) and grants the epic-speed horse to the entire account. Each Black War mount also requires its respective racial skill:
| Mount | Faction | Skill |
|---|---|---|
| Black War Steed | Alliance | Horse Riding |
| Black War Ram | Alliance | Ram Riding |
| Black Battlestrider | Alliance | Mechanostrider Piloting |
| Black War Tiger | Alliance | Tiger Riding |
| Black War Wolf | Horde | Wolf Riding |
| Black War Kodo | Horde | Kodo Riding |
| Black War Raptor | Horde | Raptor Riding |
| Red Skeletal Warhorse | Horde | Undead Horsemanship |
They are sold by Lieutenant Karter for the Alliance and Raider Bork for the Horde. PC Gamer noted that the weekly Rank Points cap prevents players from reaching high ranks in a single weekend. The Black War Mount Boost handles the multi-week journey to Rank 11 for you, where the booster earns Rank Points up to the weekly cap in Warsong Gulch, Arathi Basin, and Darkspear Islands until your character receives the rank, title, and Black War mount for their faction. I recommend not putting off PvP, because the cap doesn't let you make up for a missed week.
Deathcharger's Reins on the Black Market
Deathcharger's Reins allow you to ride Rivendare's Deathcharger (Baron Rivendare's horse) at epic speed. The WoW Forever Deathcharger item is marked as Unique and BoP, requires level 60 and Journeyman Riding, and goes into your account's collection. In WoW Classic, this horse dropped from Baron Rivendare in Stratholme, which is covered in our guide on Forever dungeons and loot.
The Black Market Auction House in Forever is run by Madam Swyndle (Agent of the Black Market) in Powderfuse Port in eastern Riverglades. In September 2026, Icy Veins spotted Deathcharger's Reins there among the rare mount listings, which start at a bid of 3,000 gold. The starting bid sets the lower price limit, as the item is taken by the player with the highest bid.
Winterspring Frostsaber for Alliance
The Reins of the Winterspring Frostsaber are not available to the Horde because the tooltip specifies any Alliance race. This item itself requires level 60, binds when picked up, and grants the saber at an epic speed for the entire account. Wowhead Forever still lists Rivern Frostwind as its seller.
Get Your Mount Without the Grind
WoW Forever mounts require the player to spend gold on training and hours of farming. The WoW Forever Mounts Boost category in the WoW Forever boost section covers these costs in stages:
- Apprentice Riding & First Mount Boost and Epic Mount Boost - At level 40, our team purchases Apprentice Riding along with your race's first mount in the desired color, and upon reaching the cap, acquires Journeyman Riding and the first epic steed of your choice.
- WoW Forever Starter Pack and WoW Forever Hero Bundle - The first package combines leveling from 1 to 60 with Apprentice Riding and the first steed at level 40. The second bundle (with the same leveling) unlocks dual spec at level 40 and, at 60, gives Journeyman Riding with an epic steed, all flight paths, and pre-raid gear.
- WoW Forever Character Leveling Boost 1–60 - The booster guides your character through quests to levels 40 and 60 and, if desired, adds Riding at 40.
- WoW Forever US Gold and WoW Forever EU Gold - Gold for training is provided within a single ruleset and faction.
- Class Quest Chains and Rare Mounts - This same category guides you through the Paladin and Warlock quest chains and obtains rare level 60 mounts.
I recommend purchasing the Epic Mount Boost along with a rare level 60 mount, because the Reins of the Spectral Bear, Deathcharger's Reins, and Reins of the Pack Kodo require Journeyman Riding. Without this skill, any of these three rewards will be left in your collection without a rider.
WoW Forever Mounts FAQ
Can you get a mount before level 40?
You cannot receive a steed before level 40 in Forever, since this requirement applies to Apprentice Riding, Summon Felsteed, Summon Warhorse, and Veteran Adventurer's Loyal Companion. Players have requested a cheap level-20 steed on the Blizzard forums, but Tim Jones links a mount to the amount of time invested in the game.
Can you trade mount items in WoW Forever?
You can transfer racial mount items to another player, since they are Binds when used and become bound upon learning. Rewards like the Reins of the Pack Kodo and Deathcharger's Reins cannot be traded because they are BoP.
Is the Dreadsteed worth it in WoW Forever?
I believe the Dreadsteed is worth the effort, since the class quest replaces the 1,000 gold trainer cost for Warlocks. The main cost is still time, because the quest chain requires a group in Scholomance and Dire Maul West.
Can Horde players ride Alliance mounts?
A Horde character cannot ride an Alliance racial mount, since the tooltip requires any Alliance race and that race's skill. The account collection does not override this rule. Exceptions include the Galestrider (ridden by Skyborne of both factions) and the Pack Kodo, which is sold by both Alliance and Horde trade factions.
Which WoW Forever mount is hardest to get?
I consider the Reins of the Spectral Bear to be the hardest, because Method estimates that the path to 55 out of 65 Legacy points takes several hundred hours. The Deathcharger's Reins come down to gold, since rare mount lots on the Black Market Auction House start at 3,000 gold. Black War mounts take weeks to obtain due to the weekly cap on Rank Points.
